Two smart telescopes define autumn 2026. ZWO’s Seestar S50 Pro went on sale on 25 August as a heavily upgraded successor to the best-selling S50. Dwarflab’s Draco was announced this month as a bigger, more ambitious instrument aimed at buyers who would otherwise build a traditional rig. They overlap less than the headlines suggest.

What the Seestar S50 Pro does well

The S50 Pro fixes most of what held the original S50 back. The sensor jumps from 2 MP to 8.3 MP on a larger 1/1.2″ chip, so images hold up when you crop or print them. The optic is now a proper APO, which tightens star colors. The 2.8° field is wide enough to frame the whole Andromeda Galaxy, the North America Nebula region or the Pleiades with room to spare.

EQ mode is the other big step. Tilt the scope on a wedge and polar align it, and it can take 60-second exposures instead of the short subs forced by alt-az field rotation. Longer subs mean less read noise per hour and better results on faint targets.

Practical points matter too: 9 hours of battery covers a full winter night, 2.8 kg fits in a backpack, and the magnetic solar filter is in the box. It is a refined, low-risk purchase from a company with a large user community.

What the Dwarflab Draco does differently

The Draco’s headline feature is a sensor that physically rotates to cancel field rotation. Alt-az mounts turn the image slowly as they track, which is why most smart telescopes cap exposures at 10 to 30 seconds unless you switch to an equatorial setup. The Draco claims 300-second exposures while staying in simple alt-az mode, with built-in guiding to keep stars round.

Combine that with 90 mm of aperture at f/3.8 and a dual-narrowband filter, and the Draco is designed to collect far more signal per night on faint nebulae, especially from light-polluted skies. The SHO edition adds a second filter so you can build Hubble-palette images.

The trade-offs are real. At 5.5 kg it is twice the weight of the S50 Pro. The battery lasts about 5 hours, so an all-night session needs external power. The narrower field suits galaxies and small nebulae better than big sky regions. IP56 sealing is a welcome plus for dewy nights.
